PBS fans and Android users received some exciting news yesterday as PBS announced the launch of its new app for Android. Powered by Brightcove’s Android SDK, the new app will increase PBS’s reach and deliver short- and long-form video experiences. As the PBS release states:
“The PBS app for Android provides access to hundreds of hours of video from PBS and member stations, including episodes from new primetime programs as well as the PBS archives, with new national and local station content updated daily. In addition, the app offers dozens of web-original videos from the award-winning PBS Digital Studios.“
PBS has been a Brightcove Zencoder customer since 2011, so we are thrilled to expand the partnership by now helping the team deliver an exceptional video experience to their Android audience where high-performing HLS delivery requires expertise. As PBS put it,
“The app is powered by Brightcove's SDK which ensures smooth video playback across all versions of the Android operating system, greater app stability and a better overall user experience.”
As we recently reported, audiences are increasingly turning to their mobile devices to watch longer-form content and PBS’s investment should position it well to capture this increasing share of viewership. Congrats on the launch!
