In the U.S., we have the Super Bowl. In Australia, it’s all about the State of Origin game, which is an annual best-of-three series of rugby league football matches between the Blues from New South Wales and the Maroons from Queensland. The 2014 State of Origin series recently kicked off, with the Blues edging out the Maroons in game 1.
Mi9, a Brightcove customer and one of Australia’s leading digital media companies, reaching 12.3 million Australians each month, took the State of Origin series to the next level this year through its state-of-the-art website and app, 9jumpin. For the first time, Origin fans can experience 9jumpin on the mobile Web (including mobile devices) as well as through the native app. This includes 9jumpin’s highly popular multiple camera angle replays for both this year’s game and historical footage, along with up-to-the-minute live match and player profiles, statistics and scores, giving fans a truly engaging second screen experience.
The team at Mi9 also added interesting new social media tie-ins for 2014, including the "tweet of Origin" to determine which team is trending and declare which state has the most vocal online fan base any any given stage in the game.
Not only is this a tremendous example of how media organizations can take advantage of the power of Brightcove’s solutions to create customized, high quality video experiences across the mobile Web and in native apps, but it’s a great way for fans to experience the games in ways they haven’t had the opportunity to before.
