What will the future of cloud computing look like? That's just what North Bridge seeks to shed light on every year when producing its Future of Cloud Computing Survey. It's the most widely endorsed survey of its kind in the industry, and gives great insight on how companies are, and plan to be, taking advantage of cloud-based technology.
This year's survey was conducted in partnership with Gigaom Research, as well as 72 collaborators, and Brightcove is proud to have been among those collaborators. Approximately 1,400 vendors and users were surveyed -- twice as many respondents as the first survey in 2011 had.
And now that the results of the 2014 survey are in, we're pretty excited to read about the current state, and see where cloud computing seems to be headed. Here are a few highlights from the survey findings:
- From 2011 to 2014, SaaS adoption has more than quintupled from just 11 percent adoption to 74 percent
- 49 percent of this year's respondents use the cloud to fuel revenue-generating or product-development activities
- 35 percent of respondents said "innovation" or "competitive advantage" were their primary reasons for using cloud computing to fuel revenue-generating or product-development activities
- The cloud has become integral to 45 percent of businesses who say that they already, or plan to, run their company from the cloud
- Across all business apps (except manufacturing), 65-70 percent of respondents will move some or significant processing to the cloud in the next 12-24 months
- 52 percent use the cloud for sales and marketing activities
- Among both vendors and business users, a hybrid cloud architecture is the most common today and is expected to grow the most over the next five years
- By 2017, nearly two-thirds of all workloads will be processed in cloud data centers
