Video Quality: The Key to Capturing an Online Audience

Connected televisions are poised to take over the traditional living room landscape, leaving many businesses wondering how to effectively capitalize on the shift. One thing that's for certain is the critical need for media companies and marketers alike to deliver engaging, high-quality online video experiences to every consumer--on any device.

According to Digital TV Research, "there will be more than 759 million televisions connected to the Internet worldwide by 2018, more than double 2013's number." Additionally, 25 percent of global consumers "plan to buy a connected TV in the next 12 months," new research from an Accenture Digital Consumer Survey indicates. Other findings show 11 percent of consumers plan to purchase a new connected TV -- replacing an existing one -- while 12 percent intend to buy a tablet that supports online video viewership.

Not only have consumers been prompted to purchase such devices, but they are also using them quite frequently. Forty-four percent of consumers admitted viewing full-length films and television shows online via connected TV and devices on a daily basis. A comparable percentage of consumers -- 39 percent -- did so on a weekly basis.

But as ownership of connected TVs and video-friendly devices has grown, so too have the instances of streaming interruptions and slowdowns increased. Accenture's research pointed to myriad issues for viewers -- an overwhelming 86 percent of online video viewers reported streaming interruptions, while 71 percent noted slowdowns were common.

It doesn't have to be this way. As viewers increasingly turn to online video, it is imperative to provide high-quality content seamlessly across multiple screens. Luckily, we have a solution: Brightcove's Video Cloud was designed with this very purpose in mind.

We offer our customers the most advanced encoding technology, enabling businesses to deliver high-quality video to any desktop or device. When you upload content to Video Cloud, it automatically generates multiple renditions of the video. Video Cloud players also automatically detect viewers' bandwidth during playback, smoothly switching between renditions midstream if necessary -- eliminating long load times and interruptions.
